The first aim of the Instituto Universitario de Economía has been to evaluate the path followed by the Economics Department of Universidad Carlos III since its beginnings in 1990-91 up to 2006-07. Thus, in The economics department of Universidad Carlos III: situation and perspectives the Department is situated in the internacional scientific environment, the reasons for its success are revised, and strengths and weaknesses that weigh on the future are discussed.
The second aim of the Institute has been to contribute to the design
of institutions for the reinforcement of the research role in centres
of excellence in Spain and Europe. Thus,
Systems of direct incentives to quality research. The case of the economics
department at the Carlos III University of Madrid . suggests the establishment of an endowment with matching funds from the public and the private sectors, whose annual flow in perpetuity should be used to finance the quality research done in our Department.
Both monographs, writen by a wide group of members of the Institute under the direction of Profesor Ruiz-Castillo, have been thoroughly discussed during the 2006-07 year by the Department faculty. Consequently, they do capture the viewpoint of both organisms about the Department’s performance and the opportunity of completing the present reward system by new, innovative schemes.
