The Department of Economics is committed to academic excellence. In a recent comparison, sponsored by the European Economic Association and published in the Journal of the European Economic Association (JEEA, vol. 1(6) (2003) pp. 1346-1366), it was ranked number 52 in the world, number 9 in the European Union, and number 2 in Spain. In updated ranking provided by econphd.net (http://www.econphd.net/rank/rallec.htm), the Department is ranked 46 in the world, number 9 in the European Union, and number 1 in Spain. Since its inception in 1990, the Department of Economics has been characterized by its international composition. During the last 10 years the proportion of faculty members not born in Spain has been between 25 and 30 per cent. Presently, there are faculty members from 10 different nationalities. ResearchYou can also consult more complete Curricula and research interests of faculty members at the staff's personal pages page. The Department has a regular weekly Seminar. More informally, there is a biweekly Micro Workshop. Recently the Department, together with CEMFI (Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros, a research and graduate education foundation linked to the Bank of Spain), has started a new Macro Workshop (Madrid Macroeconomics, or MadMac) which takes place at CEMFI facilities in downtown Madrid. The Departments of Business and Statistics also hold regular Seminars. Faculty members have been very active in the last few years in organizing international conferences which received generous funding from Spanish and EU sources. The Department frequently hosts Visiting Professors from all over the world. Support for researchThe Department does not typically fund research projects. Research funds are normally obtained by groups of Faculty members applying for both Spanish and EU grants. New faculty members are normally ensured a soft landing by other faculty members in their same area, who provide them with some initial travel funds. New faculty members are expected to file new research grant applications with the help of their colleagues. This totally informal and unstructured process has worked very well until now. Computer FacilitiesEvery Faculty member is equipped with a computer (PC or Mac, depending on individual preferences) and are connected to nearby laser printers, but most faculty members have printers in their own offices. There is also a common room with several PCs for the Ph.D. students. TeachingThe Department teaches a variety of subjects at the undergraduate level, in the B.A. studies of Economics, Law, Business, Humanities, and in the studies of Statistics, Public Management and Labor Relations. The Department of Economics manages the Graduate Program in Economics. Several Faculty members are also engaged in the M.A. studies organized by the University.
